Premises of Thornton and Co, India Rubber Manufacturers. c1918, altered C20. By SD Kitson. Reinforced concrete and steel frame faced in matt-glazed faience ('Burmantofts Marmo') by the Leeds Fireclay Co., roof not visible. 3 storeys, 2 bays, Classical style. Late C20 ground-floor shop windows. The 2 bays have identical facades of recessed 2-tier windows behind fluted columns in antis with rosette and egg-and-dart motifs to capitals, entablature with triglyphs, deep modillion eaves cornice and pierced blocking course with centre plaque flanked by lion heads. Raised lettering on the plaques: THORNTON/AND CO. LTD; and on the entablature, left: INDIA RUBBER MANUFACTURERS, right, (cut back): THORNTON & CO. LIMITED. INTERIOR: not inspected. This is one of the '3 notable buildings with their Burmantofts Marmo facades intact in Leeds', (van Lemmen 1984). 'Marmo' was an imitation marble made by the Leeds Fireclay Company after 1889. Other buildings in the city include Atlas Chambers, King Street and The Scottish Union and National Insurance Co., Park Row (qv). An undated photograph in the Kirkstall Museum archive shows that the left facade only was built originally.
