DOWN ST MARY DOWN ST MARY SS 70 SW 2/165 - Hacche-Thain Headstone approximately 4 metres north- east of vestry of Church of St Mary GV II

Headstone. Dated 1889 in memory Mary Hacche-Thain. Bath stone enriched with polychrome mosaic. Gothic style. Upright stone standing approximately 0.9 metres high. Volcanic stone plinth. Moulded pointed head, flanking pilasters with sunken panels with trefoil heads and fleur-de-lys finials, and low flanking pilasters. The top panel has a relief Latin cross fleuree on a stepped base on a ground of gold and red mosaic. The lower panel is inscribed with Victorian Gothic Lettering and records the death of Mary Hacche-Thain in 1889. This is one of a series of unusual headstones in the churchyard which are distinguished by their use of polychrome mosaic decoration. They are obviously the result of the Rev. W T A Radford's interest in craftmanship. The finest of the Clayton and Bell windows in the church, the Jesse window, is a memorial to the same lady.
