BRIDGE SQUARE (North West Side) No 12 No 13

No 12 and left hand (south-west) part of No 13 together form a timber-framed building on a north-west - south-east axis; the right hand (north-east) part of No 13 seems to comprise a wing with a separate system of framing. On the basis of recent investigations (1970-71) No 12 may have originally been a 2-storey building and the connecting wing in No 13 may have had a 1st floor hall. Entrance front of No 12 faces south-west on to the yard of the Maltings. 2 storey, 2 window late C18 front with central doorway and blocked 1st floor central opening. Old tile gabled roof continues into No 13. Tall panelled external brick stack at left hand end with herringbone pattern in central panel. 1 small dormer. Multi-coloured brick front. Timber-framing visible in upper part of gable end. Windows with segmental heads; 4 panes wide except for a 1st floor upper window which is 3 panes wide. 4-panelled door with architrave frame; modern flat hood over. 1 storey extension of 1 bay and door at north-west end. No 13:- 2 storey and attic. Timber-frame with brick nogging, with moulded beam at foot, to upper part, which probably oversailed ground floor originally. The lower part rendered brick. Gable end to left hand and small attic casement. 2 3-light leaded casements on 1st floor. 2 Yorkshire casements on ground floor. The left hand return front has one window, 4 panes wide on 1st floor with double half-glazed door to right hand on ground floor. South-east returning wall, which connects with No 12, is rendered above; of brick below and with timber-framing visible at right hand end on 1st floor. No 12 undergoing careful restoration at time of re-survey.

The listed buildings in Bridge Square, Firgrove Hill (West Side), Red Lion Lane (North West Side) and Nos 57 amd 59 Abbey Street, form a group.
