8/21 Five monuments in churchyard about
15m north of chancel of Church of
St Martin
GV II
Four chest tombs in a row, running east-west and a fifth further
south-east, earlier C19. From west:
a) Unidentified monument, c1830, ashlar, similar to Stiles and
Bewley monuments (q.v.). Baluster angles, plinth, base, heavy
cornice with reeded edge and panelled frieze with three
rosettes, and stepped, ridged cap. Two plaques with incised
borders and rebated angles.
b) Whitwell monument, c1835, pennant stone with moulded base and
capstone, Gothic panelled angle and centre piers, the centre
pier raised on south but simply outlined on north side.
Inscription to R. Whitwell died 1833.
c) Vines monument, c1840, pennant stone with heavy lyre ends and
sarcophagi in relief. South side has plaque flanked by low
relief carving, drapery above, figures in niches below.
Inscription to Jane Vines died 1837.
d) W. Butler monument, c1840, ashlar with baluster angles, moulded
base and cap and two south plaques with husk drop between.
Inscription to W. Butler died 1840.
e) Thomas monument, about 3m south east of d), c1840, ashlar with
baluster angles, moulded base and ridged capstone. Large
rectangular plaque each side. Inscription to Elizabeth Thomas
died 1834.
