(North West side)
7/10001 Nos. 169, 171, 173 (odd)
shall be replaced by the following entry:
TL 7006 SE CHELMSFORD, FORMER MB MOULSHAM STREET
(North West side)
7/10001 Nos. 170 - 173 (consec)
GV II
Shops, offices and flat. Mid C16, refronted in late C19. Timberframed with rendered brick front.
Roofs of clay plain tiles with decorative ridge tiles and brick chimneystack. Two storeys; 6
windows. Window to 170 is a 3-light small pane casement. Windows to 171 and 173 are double
hung sashes with two tripartite and central smaller window, all replicas of 1993 and all with small
panes. Twentieth century shopfront to 170 with fascia and blind bow. Nineteenth century
shopfront with fascia to 171-3 with end console. Parapet with 3 gable-like raisings, each with a
pendant shaft on a moulded corbel. Elaborate moulded rainwater head of late C19 with
downpipe. Extensive C20 rear additions. Timber frame of 4 more or less equal bays with jowled
posts, halved and bridled scarf joints and much reused timber. Simple crownpost roof with
longitudinal bracing which, until recently, had remains of C17 painted decoration. No 170 has
blocked diamond-mullioned window. This is an exceptionally early date, in the Essex context,
for the substantial use of reused timber and perhaps indicates that timber was already expensive
or extremely difficult to obtain by the mid C16.
