SEMINGTON CHURCH STREET ST 86 SE (south side) 4/185 Nos 26 and 27 II GV
Detached house, now two cottages. Mid C16, wings probably late C16. Square-panelled timber-framing with plastered panels partly rebuilt in rubble stone, Bridgwater tiled roof with brick stacks. Three-bay main range with wings projecting to front, entrances now on outward facing sides of wings. No 26 has C20 door and 2-light casements to ground floor of east wing, 2-light recessed chamfered mullioned casement and 5-light casement to first floor, gable end of wing has large stone external stack, blocked Tudor-arched attic light, side facing courtyard has 2-light casements. Main range has half-glazed door and 2-light casement to front, three 2-light casements to first floor. Rear has C20 extension with mullioned casements within, 2-light mullioned casements, and wooden casements to first floor, No 27 has 2-storey, 2-window west front with planked door, 2-light casement to left, first floor has 3-light wood mullioned window to left, two 2-light casements to right, partly rubble stone. Gable end of wing to road has 3-light casement to ground floor and 2-light casement to first floor. Interior: No 26 contains former parlour wing of the house with fine moulded cross-beams to ceiling and moulded vertical posts in corners, large stone square fireplace. Entrance hall and central room have deep chamfered beams with stepped stops. Winding stairs against front wall of main range with C17 turned balusters and square newel with finial to landing, boxed in with plank and muntin. Good planked doors with moulded muntins, ornamental strap hinges, moulded architraves with zig-zag ornament to cornices. Timber-framed partitions and external frame visible especially to first floor. No 27 has large open fireplace on end wall of main range; probably former 'hall' and service end of house, chamfered lintel on stone jambs, lintel has raised lozenge ornament with initials IW and IV, chamfered beams with jewel and ogee stops. First floor room over kitchen has Tudor-arched stone fireplace, small wall cupboard with butterfly hinges. Roof over main range raised and renewed when wings added; 4 bays over centre of main range with larger bays to ends, wings have 2-bay roofs. (Wiltshire Buildings Record, Devizes)
