The Old Rectory
GV II
Rectory, now house. C17, altered C18 and C19. Timber-framed,
plastered, pebbledashed and colourwashed. Old tile roofs with
M gables to north and south, and moulded eaves and central
cruciform plan brick chimneystack. Cornice to east range.
Welsh slated double roof to west range. East range originally
3 bay lobby entry plan, west range rebuilt late C18/early C19.
EXTERIOR: east range has 3 nearly flush set 12-pane sash
windows (casement in S elevation). North elevation has 1 sash
to left and 6-panel door, 4 raised and fielded, lowest 2
flush, in architrave surround, with diagonally divided
fanlight and flat moulded cornice doorhood on cut brackets
below moulded modillions in centre.
South elevation has 2 tall 12-pane sashes, with lower 9-pane
sash having flush panelled lower section to form glazed doors.
East range, 1 flush set sash on first floor of north and south
elevations; mullion and transom casement on ground floor of
north elevation, large casement bay window with French
casements and fishscale tiled roof on south elevation.
East elevation has 8-pane sashes on first floor, and
projecting C19 porch extension and lean-to conservatory on
ground floor. Single storey C19 lean-to on west end.
INTERIOR: sitting Room in south of east range has panelling
with fielded lower panels, moulded dado rail, and larger
panels above, with moulded cornice. Panel over fireplace
raised and fielded with bolection roll moulding. Adjoining
fireplace to left is recessed cupboard with scalloped moulded
edged shelves, dresser with tall width 2 recessed panel
drawer, and single small drawer at left below, and cut
profiled splat legs. Twin 3 panel outer doors.
Staircase early/mid C18 dogleg plan, moulded close string,
newel with ogee pendant, balusters with barleysugar twists
between urns, and moulded handrail. First floor bedrooms in
east range have bolection moulded surrounds.
Tight winder stair to attic against chimney probably
originally continued down to ground floor. South attic has
early C19 cast-iron gate in C18 pilaster surround with bold
cornice mouldings beneath mantelshelf. Doors include simple 4
panel pattern with plank doors and strap hinges in attics.
Roof has late medieval construction with halved and pegged
rafters with carpenters' marks, and butt purlins housed in
principal rafters at bay lines. Some early timber structure
including a west gable at right angles to east wing appears to
survive in roof void, but lower roof of west wing generally
sawn rafters with low pitched Welsh slate covering.
HISTORICAL NOTE: The Old Rectory was St Andrew's Rectory until
about 1860. It originally had a multiple gabled south
elevation as shown in 1784 engraving of the view from the
Castle Gatehouse, but the west range was rebuilt during the
incumbency of Rev. White, 1825-29.
