Includes: Nos.27 AND 29 BROOMHALL STREET. Fireclay works and showroom, now shops. Dated 1888. Built for John Armitage and Son. Brick with elaborate terracotta dressings and decoration and hipped and gabled slate roofs with 2 ridge and single gable brick stacks. EXTERIOR: plinth, string courses, moulded modillion eaves. Works, fronting Broomhall street, 3 storeys; 4 window range. Slightly recessed centre with a round-arched tympanum with keystone, containing relief panels and blind tracery. Under this, a paired plain sash with shafts. On each side, a plain sash with relief panelled tympanum with keystone. Above, central panel inscribed "Wharncliffe Fireclay Works", flanked by single segment-headed plain sashes, and beyond, single medallions. Ground floor has central segmental arched carriage opening with polychrome head and keystone, flanked by single segment-headed plain sashes. These openings are linked by a moulded impost band. Showroom block, fronting Division Street, 2 storeys; 4 window range. Four 2-light casements with shouldered lights and toplights, with moulded segmental headed openings with mask keystones. Alternating with the larger windows, 4 shouldered single lights. Rounded corner, to left, has an obliterated painted sign. Left return has a segment-headed plain sash to right, with toplight, and to left, a smaller plain sash. Ground floor has a continuous bracketed fascia cornice to the shopfronts along main front and return. Corner entrance with glazed double door and overlight. To right, a wooden pilastered double shopfront with a central glazed door and overlight, flanked by single cross mullioned shop windows. To right, a similar single shopfront with glazed door and overlight to left and cross mullioned window to right. To right again, a recessed round-headed doorway with mask keystone, flanked by single small blocked windows. Flanking the door head, a pair of datestones, and above it, an erased inscribed panel. Left return has a panelled door to left with overlight, and to right a cross mullioned shop window, all with pilastered wooden surround and bracketed cornice. INTERIOR not inspected. Armitage's home, No.91 Crookes Road, (qv) and its ancillary buildings, are ornamented in the same way with examples of his products.
