GV II
Workhouse, now administration building at Nether Edge Hospital. 1842-43, with later C19 additions and late C20 alterations. By William Flockton. Coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and steep pitched slate roofs with various coped stone stacks. Tudor Revival style. H-plan. EXTERIOR: plinth, first floor band, moulded eaves, coped gables. 2 and 3 storeys; 25 window range. Windows are mainly mullion windows with pointed lights in chamfered surrounds with flat heads. Projecting central block has a recessed entrance bay topped with a shouldered dormer containing a clock. On the upper floors, a 2-light window flanked by single windows. Central moulded ashlar doorcase with segment-arched opening and half-glazed double doors, flanked by single windows. Projecting flanking wings have shouldered gables. 2 storey canted bay windows with coped parapets, and a 4-light window on each floor. Above, a smaller 4-light window, and in the gable, a square panel. Beyond, on either side, a flat-roofed wing, 2 storeys, with angle buttresses and coped parapet. Two 2-light windows on each floor. Beyond again, at the rear of flanking courtyards, set back wings, 3 storeys; 7 window range. Three 2-light windows flanked by single windows on the upper floors. Below, roofless arcades with elliptical arches and crenellated parapet with bosses. At each end, projecting wings, 3 storeys, with shouldered coped gables. On each floor, a 4-light window. Left wing return, 7 windows, has to the rear a range of single storey buildings, L-plan. Right wing return has a 3 storey addition in the same style. INTERIOR has entrance hall with moulded cornice and quatrefoil cast-iron columns. This building was originally built as the Ecclesall Union Workhouse.
