18/10/88 Aizlewood's Mill GV II Corn mill, now offices and industrial units. 1847. By William
Flockton of Sheffield. For John Aizlewood. Later C19
additions. Restored and converted 1989. Red brick with hipped
and gabled slate roofs.
EXTERIOR: main block has bracketed eaves and panelled parapet.
6 storeys; 10 window range. L-plan.
East front, to Nursery Lane, has 9 segment-headed tripartite
windows with the 8th bay having double loft doors and C20
balcony. Above, 9 similar tripartite windows with a single
loft door and balcony. The next 2 floors have 8 segment-headed
tripartite windows with the 4th and 8th bays having double
loft doors and balconies. The top floor has 8 round-headed
tripartite windows and 2 round-headed loft doors, the right
one with a balcony. The openings on the 4 upper floors are
linked by 10 round-headed vertical sunken panels, which
alternate on the top floor with sunken square panels. Ground
floor has, to left, a large round-headed carriage entrance,
and to its right a C20 door flanked by 2 round-headed windows.
To right, a round-headed C20 door flanked by single C20
entrances, the left one blocked.
North front, to Spitalfields, has similar fenestration with 5
windows. The upper 4 floors are linked by 5 round-headed
vertical sunken panels with 3 floors of segment-headed
tripartite windows and the top floor with round-headed
tripartite windows. Ground floor has 5 round-headed windows.
The entrance front, to Nursery Street, has to left a 6 storey
projecting wing, its lower floors covered by adjoining
buildings. On each floor, 3 tripartite windows, the lower 2
floors linked by round-headed sunken panels, the added upper
floor with round-headed windows.
Right return has similar fenestration, restored, on 6 floors,
with round-headed openings to the ground floor.
To right, the inner courtyard of the 6 storey main block has
similar fenestration to the east and north fronts. In the 5th
bay, a very tall square brick chimney stack. To its left, a
C20 glazed door with metal canopy. To its right, a C20
carriage opening. To left, in front of the wing, 2 mid C19
additions, 3 storeys, with gables facing the courtyard. Both
have second-floor brick bands and tripartite windows in
round-headed openings. Wider left gable has 2 pairs of
windows, the right one taller. Above, 5 windows, and above
them, a round window in the gable. Ground floor has 2
round-headed entrances to right. Smaller right gable has 2
pairs of windows on the 2 upper floors, and a round window in
the gable. Ground floor has 2 large round-headed openings.
INTERIOR has cast-iron Doric columns supporting wooden beams,
and queen post truss roof with cast-iron joints. Top floor has
a hopper, worm and cyclone, mid C20, and at the north end a
stairwell with a belt-type grain elevator.
