St Andrew's Methodist Church and
Sunday School with steps and wall GV II St Andrew's Methodist Church and Sunday school, now the
Chinese Christian Church, with steps and terrace wall. Dated
1896. Rock-faced stone and brick, with ashlar dressings and
gabled and hipped slate roofs. Gothic Revival style.
EXTERIOR: plinth, buttresses, string courses, coped main
gables. 2 storeys plus basement; 3 x 9 bays.
Front has projecting central coped gable with finial and
flanking buttresses, sillband and corbel table. Two 2-light
pointed arched windows with plate tracery and above, a blank
round window. Below, 2 pairs of smaller lancets. All these
windows have hoodmoulds. On either side, a lower hipped
entrance bay with angle buttresses and corbel table, with 2
segment-headed lancets and below, a pointed arched double door
under a moulded gable with finial. Returns of the entrance
bays have 2 similar lancets above, and a stepped triple stair
window below. Outside, a flight of stone steps enclosed by a
terrace wall with flat coping.
Rock-faced right front, to Anns Road, has to right a coped
gable with a segment-headed 3-light window with keystone and
hoodmould, and below, 3 smaller segment-headed windows. To
right, a single window. To left, a bay with 2 windows on each
floor. To left again, a gabled entrance bay with a graduated
3-light window and below, cusped opening with recessed door.
To left, a range with bays divided by pilaster buttresses,
with 4 pairs of segment-headed lancets above and 4 stone
mullioned 2-light windows below under drip moulds.
Left front has to left a hipped projection with 3
segment-headed 2-light windows and above, 3 flat-headed
2-light windows, the central one under a small gable. Basement
has 6 boarded openings. To right, a range with bays divided by
pilasters. 5 pairs of segment-headed windows on the upper
floors and below, 6 boarded openings to the basement.
INTERIOR: largely original, has arch braced roof with panelled
ceiling and panelled gallery on all sides. At the front,
moulded elliptical arch containing organ. Fittings include
original matchboard pulpit and benches.
