House, formerly farmhouse. Early C16 or earlier origins, C17 alterations, some C20
alterations. Stone rubble, porch masonry brought to course, scantle slate roof,
right gable end chimney local brick, left gable end chimney stone with moulded cap,
some C19 brick dressings, some polyphant dressings. Complex development. Probably
a small medieval open hall house extended in the C17 when the 2-storey front
projection was added. There may have been a parlour at the higher end, now
missing. The lower end now consists of 2 rooms divided by a stair hall with a late
C17/early C18 stair, stair hall may have been a through passage between the lower
end service rooms and the extended hall. Present plan single depth, 3 rooms wide
with rear right outshut under catslide roof. 2-storey front right projection
contains porch and stair, forming L plan with main range. 2 storeys. 3 + 1
window front with gabled 2-storey projection at right front. Entrance into
projection through off centre square-headed chamfered stone doorway with carved
label stops, hoodmould missing. Further entrance into stair hall under late C20
storm porch with sloping slate roof. Ground floor windows under flat brick arches:
left, 16-pane late C19 sash; to right of storm porch, 2-light C20 casement, 6 panes
per light; above storm porch, 2-light C19 casement, 8 panes per light; to left of
gabled projection, 2-light C19 casement, 8 panes per light. First floor windows:
left, 2-light C19 casement, 6 panes per light; to left of gabled projection, 2-
light C20 casement, 4 panes per light. 2-light hollow-chamfered polyphant
mullioned window above main entrance, small stair light to right of mullioned
window. Remains of mullioned window in left return of projection. Two 2-light
timber mullioned windows to rear left of house at first floor level. 3-light
polyphant mullioned window with hoodmould and label stops on ground floor in left
gable end.
Interior. Ground floor room right has large fireplace with chamfered fireplace
beam with runout stops. Ground floor room left has ceiling beams and large
fireplace. Large recess with seat on rear wall, no evidence of former window
found during renovations. Late C17/early C18 dogleg stair with ramped handrail and
turned balusters. First floor room left has similar recess in rear wall; fireplace
with chamfered fireplace beam with step ogee stops. Middle first floor room has
moulded timber cornice. Principals in first floor rooms at lower end indicate roof
raised. Front right projection contains stone newel stair. 2 smoke-blackened
trusses with collars pegged and halved into principals at higher end.
