AIREBOROUGH RAWDON HALL DRIVE SE 23 NW LS 19 (north side) 8/20 Rawdon Hall 19.10.1962 - II*

Lesser gentry house. C17, probably in 2 builds; altered. Coursed squared sandstone, stone slate roof. Extended T-plan: hall-range on north-south axis, facing east, with crosswing at south (left) end, and another crosswing at west (rear) end of this. Two storeys except west wing, which is 3 storeys; 2-unit main range has central 2-storey gabled porch, with chamfered Tudor-arched outer doorway under steeply-cambered lintel, inscribed "G R" A and recessed 2-light window above, with round-headed lights; to the left, a recessed transomed window of 7 lights, with chamfered mullions and hoodmould with inward-returned ends, and above this a 4-light window with unusual ogee- headed lights; to the right, chamfered mullion windows of 4 and 2 lights at ground floor, 4 lights above; 2 ridge chimneys flanking the porch. Projecting wing to left has dripmould carried round, a recessed mullioned window on each floor of the gable, and a round-headed light at ground floor of re-entrant. Return front of this wing has an inserted doorway in centre, two 5-light windows at ground floor and two 4-light windows above, with a single light between them. South gable of west wing, 3 storeys, has similar windows of 6 lights at ground and 1st floors and 3 lights above, all under hoodmoulds with inward-returned ends; return wall of this wing has inserted windows in similar style.

Interior: fully-panelled rooms at ground floor of south and west wings with Renaissance-style carved overmantels in both, that in the west wing lettered "Anno" "16" Domini 25 (over C18 stone fireplace with keystone and moulded cornice); guilloche frieze to panelling in south wing, fluted frieze in west wing; chamfered beams in both rooms; in addition the hall range has part of a carved stone frieze said to have been removed from a monastery, and a moulded stone doorway into the wing.
