south-west end of car park GV II Group of 6 chest tombs close to hedge of car park at SW end.
C18 and C19. Described from NE to SW;
(i) Upright chest tomb, earliest decipherable date 1833, to
JOSEPH WICKES. Sandstone. Flat ledger to cavetto-mould edges
on plain sides with raised panels, inset ends to frieze and
base, set to moulded base; (ii) Chest tomb, smaller than
preceding, to JAMES GOODSALL, 1790. Sandstone. Flat ledger,
raised panels to E and W sides, inset to frieze and base at
ends, and set to flared cavetto-mould base. Badly worn in some
areas; (iii) Square upright chest tomb, earliest decipherable
date 1810, but also BROOKES/BROWNE 1831. Sandstone. Hollow
pyramidal capping on flat ledger to moulded edge above frieze,
square raised panels, inset corners, set on moulded base; (iv)
Lofty chest tomb, earliest decipherable date 1804, to JANE
EDWARDS, wife of THOMAS EDWARDS, MASON, 1804. Sandstone. Flat
ledger to moulded edges, raised panels to sides with quadrant
inset corners, decorative scrolls and rosettes, S end with
raised oval panel, all on moulded base and large raised
platform. Further inscriptions include ..... STANLEY, 1816;
(v) Upright chest tomb, to SAMUEL JOHNS, 1805. Sandstone.
Domed pyramid on flat ledger to moulded edges above horizontal
fluted frieze, inset corners, raised panels to sides, all on
moulded base; (vi) Upright chest tomb, undated, but late C18
style, includes inscription to ROBERT PRICE, PLUMBER.
Sandstone. Pyramidal top to fluted edge on flat ledger to
moulded edges, deep worn frieze, raised side panels.
