Manor house. Late C17, remodelled c1720-40 for Edward Younge,
friend of Lord Pembroke, and late C18. Limestone and flint
chequerwork with ashlar surrounds to windows, buff brickwork plinth
and plat band and surrounds to side windows. Slate roof. Two tall
storeys, 5 bays. Through hall double pile plan with service
extension on east of rear corner. Central pair of glazed doors
with fanlight within small Tuscan portico. Twelve-paned sashes
with raised architraves and keystones, but narrow lights either
side of door. Upper floor has similar 12-paned sashes but surround
has cambered head and keystone, and early C19 iron balconies.
Moulded cornice and panelled parapet, ball finials at ends. Return
elevation on west is of 6 bays. Higher plat band and ground floor
windows with brick architraves, pulvinated frieze and alternating
heavy triangular and segmental pediments in brick in Palladian
manner. Upper floor windows also have frieze and flat stone
cornice. Projecting semi-circular stair at rear.
Interior: First bay of hallway has groined plaster ceiling, and 6-
panelled doors to drawing room on left, dado, cornice and
chimneypiece. To right, the library, with a simple cornice and
garlanded fire surround with marble slips. Dining room to rear, on
west front, has elaborate chimneypiece with mirror and triangular
pediment. Doors also with pulvinated frieze and pediments.
Dentilled plaster cornice with elaborate frieze, and baroque
plasterwork to walls, all of c1745-49, the excellent coffered
ceiling now gone. Good stair at end of hall with an open-well, and
turned balusters. Service wing heightened early C20 to 2 storeys,
in brick. Cross windows.
