GV II* Church. Late medieval (probably C15), restored in late C19. Coursed squared
sandstone, stone slate roof. West tower, nave with south aisle, chancel with
south chapel. Perpendicular style. Three-stage tower, mostly of C19 masonry
externally, and without buttresses, has a 2-light traceried west window, a
small rectangular window in each side of the 2nd stage, belfry windows of
2 cusped lights with double-chamfered reveals, and a moulded cornice and
embattled parapet; on the north side, an external stair turret rising to the
2nd stage, of worn medieval masonry, with a chamfered plinth and 2 offsets.
The 2-bay nave has a buttressed north wall with C19 square-headed
Perpendicular-style windows: 3 lights to the 1st bay, one and 2 lights to
the 2nd bay. On the south side is a restored aisle of 2 bays, with
buttresses; the gabled medieval porch to the 1st bay has a 2-centred arched
outer doorway with hollow moulded surround, restored gable coping and corner
pinnacles, roof carried on 3 massive chamfered transverse arches, an inner
doorway with 2 orders of chamfer and an C18 door with 6 fielded panels; to
the right of the porch are a C19 two-light window with cusped tracery and a
3-light mullioned window. An embattled parapet to the aisle continues over
the chapel, which is of 3 bays, that in the centre with a priest door which
has a depressed arched lintel and cavetto moulded surround, and the outer
bays with C19 3-light windows. The chancel has a restored Perpendicular east
window with a transom, 10 lights above and 5 below, and remains of a drip-
mould.
Interior: 3-bay aisle arcade of double-chamfered arches on octagonal
columns; chancel arch with 2 orders of hollow chamfer; 3-bay chapel arcade
like that of the nave; coffered ceiling to chancel, with moulded beams
supported by short wall-posts, roll-moulded secondary beams, and carved
bosses; blocked doorway in north wall of chancel; C15 font on a pedestal,
octagonal with raised carved shields and incised Latin script on the cardinal
sides.
