House. C16 or earlier, with substantial remodelling and
additions in C17, C18 and C20. Coursed squared gritstone,
massive in some areas, with ashlar dressings. Rising from a
plinth in part, with quoins, coped gables with moulded
kneelers, ridge and gable chimneys, and stone slated roofs,
now covered with hessian and pitch. Two linked ranges, that to
the south-west earlier and lower, with a taller and now
symmetrical range to the north-east, to which has been added a
single 2-storey addition. The south-east elevation of the main
symmetrical range is of 2 storeys and 5 bays, with a 2-storey
gabled porch to the centre, having a wide moulded four-centred
arched doorway, which appears to be earlier than the range of
which it forms part, now with C20 part-glazed doors. Above, a
rectangular window with irregularly shaped surrounds, but with
incised margins to delineate jambs, head and sill. The
remaining part of the irregular surround flush with the
surrounding masonry. The windows to the south-west are of
matching design, with C19 glazing bar casements, some now
replaced with C20 plastic replacements. North-east side with
2-light windows to first floor, above a single-light opening
and a quoined doorway.
Single bay attached to north-east end, with C20 gabled
single-storey porch, and two 2-light casement windows in C20
stone surrounds, one window to each floor. South-west range of
3 bays, two of which are advanced, in separate stages.
South-west end bay with altered or inserted 3-light chamfered
mullioned window which cuts through the plinth, and with a C17
3-light chamfered mullioned window above. Central bay,
formerly a side wall stack, but now altered to form double
doorway beneath a plain lintel, with a single-light window
above. To the south-west, a set-back to the side wall line,
and then a second advanced bay with a 3-light ground-floor
window, both C19. Monopitch lean-to against north-east gable
wall. Rear elevation much altered, but with several 2-light
chamfered mullioned windows, some with mullions intact. C20
monopitch porch, with glazed front between massive
mullion-pillars. Lower range with C20 3-light glazing bar
casements, and re-set oeil-de-boeuf window at ground level.
Advanced bay beneath catslide roof at south-west end.
INTERIOR: much altered, with mullioned window openings to
former end gable at north-east end, now enclosed by later bay.
C17 staircase with moulded handrail, turned balusters, and a
dog-gate at its head. There are a number of modestly moulded
C18 fire surrounds to bedrooms. The two bays at the south-west
end are open to the roof, with an inserted C20 gallery on the
south-east side linking first-floor rooms at either end.
Within the full-height room is a transverse stack, with
massive plain corbels carrying a steeply cambered moulded
hearth lintel. This has been moved from its former side wall
position, where exposed sections of moulded jambs are visible
in wall plaster.
