BOWLALLEY LANE (North side),
No.17, Cogan House GV II Office building. Architect Smith & Brodrick, built 1876-8, with late C20 alterations. Brick with ashlar and moulded brick dressings and slate roofs with two
coped side-wall stacks. Plinth, sill bands, cornice, panelled
coped parapet. three storeys plus attics; 9-window range. Windows
are mainly plain sashes, those above the ground floor with
round heads. First floor has nine windows with moulded heads and
imposts. Above, nine similar windows with plainer heads, set in
recessed panels separated by pilaster strips. Three strips above
the entrance have moulded brackets. Above the cornice, a large
off-centre dormer with cornice and machicolations, with two
pointed-arched sashes in recessed panels, topped with a
shouldered moulded coped gable with a graduated round-headed
triple window. To right, a dormer with moulded coped gable
topped with a finial, with a pointed-arched sash and
hoodmould. To left, a similar double gabled dormer. Below, an
off-centre entrance with a round-arched opening on corbels,
with enriched spandrels, cornice and balustrade. In the
opening, a pair of shouldered doorways, the left one with a
moulded 4-panel door. Over each door, a moulded tympanum and
above, a cusped roundel. To left, four plain sashes with flat
heads. To right, a late C20 brick shop front with a transomed
3-light window to left and a door with overlight to right.
