BETCHWORTH C.P. STATION ROAD TQ 25SW 4/22 Broome Park 11/11/66 II
Country House, now nursing home. Early C19 with C20 extensions. Incised white- washed stucco with slate mansard roofs. Two storeys and attics on entrance front under 3 flat-roofed casement dormers. Rendered stacks to ends and rear. Three- bay front, A B A, with angle pilaster piers and articulating piers on the front, eaves cornice above. One 12-pane, glazing-bar sash window to first floor outer bays, tripartite sash window to ground floor outer bays with panelled aprons below and flat hoods on console brackets above. Three 12-pane, glazing-bar sash windows to first floor centre bay, one 12-pane and one plate sash window flanking circular portico with curved sashes and cornice on attached Corinthian half-columns to the ground floor. Half-glazed double doors to outer side, panelled doors within. Whitewashed render and flint panel C20 flat roofed extensions projecting to front right. Left hand return front:- Two dormers. Six first floor, 12-pane, glazing- bar sash windows between piers. Five sashes to ground floor, two to right flanking fixed round-arched casement. Door with transome-light over to right. Two first floor and two ground floor 12-pane sash windows to left range, the latter flanking a fixed casement. Plate sash to first floor left end over wide, cambered-head, fixed casement window below. Rear:- Flat-roofed extension to rear right with balcony railings over. Irregular sash fenestration to left with clock face and cupola above. Interior:- Panelled entrance hall. Some marble fireplaces. Traceried fanlights to door. Residents lounge:- panelled walls with dado railing. Broken pediment doorcase. Thin foliate plasterwork ceiling. This house was for many years the residence of Sir Benjamin Brodie Bt. Doctor to George IV and William IV, who died here on 21 October 1862.
