Church and adjoining boundary wall. 1870. By Adams & Kelly.
Yellow brick, with red brick and ashlar dressings and slate
roofs. Early English style. Plinth, cogged eaves, buttresses,
coped gables. Windows are lancets with plate tracery, set in
pointed-arched recesses.
Chancel with apse, north-east tower with spire, south-east
vestry, nave with clerestorey and aisles, north-west porch.
Apse has 3 triple lancets and chancel has a single lancet on
each side, to east. Tower, 3 stages, has plinth, string
courses and corbel table. Lower stage has a single lancet to
north and a door to east, each with 2 small lancets above it.
To west, above the aisle roof, 2 similar small lancets. Second
stage has on each side 2 pairs of very tall, narrow lancets.
Bell stage has on each side, 2 pairs of louvred double lancet
bell openings. Octagonal broach spire has a single tier of
gabled lucarnes and above, a tier of small double lancets with
oval windows above them.
South-eastern vestry has to east a triple lancet and a corner
stack. To west, a shouldered doorway with lamp bracket above.
Nave clerestorey has on each side 6 groups of 3 small lancets.
West end has a tall recess with a traceried circular window
and below it, 2 double lancets. Below, a double rebated
doorway.
North aisle has 4 triple lancets to east of the porch and
another triple lancet to west. West end has a double lancet.
South aisle has 6 triple lancets and a double lancet at the
west end. Gabled north-west porch has a chamfered and rebated
doorway with wrought-iron gate, and a single unglazed lancet
in each side.
INTERIOR, mainly rendered, has rebated roll moulded brick
chancel arch with keystone and hoodmould and slender piers.
Chancel has waggon roof with arch braces and wooden wall
shafts on angel corbels. Wooden ribs to apse. String course
and sill band, traceried wood panelling to east end. East end
has 3 triple lancets with stained glass, 1900. To north and
south, a moulded arch with hoodmould, the north one with
organ, the south one with panelled screen and overlight, with
2 round windows above. East of the arches, a single lancet on
each side.
Nave has scissor braced roof with collars. 6-bay arcades with
roll moulded brick arches with hoodmoulds and angel stops,
with round stone columns, square foliate capitals and
octagonal bases. Plain clerestorey windows on sill band. 2
north-west bays are enclosed by a glazed wooden screen, with
traceried panelled internal porch with crest. 2 south-west
bays blocked late C20 to form a side room. West end has a
stained-glass memorial window c1918, on a sill band, and
below, a central doorway.
Aisles have lean-to roofs and eastern arches with hoodmoulds,
the north one with organ pipes and below them, a traceried
door. South-east round arch has traceried screen and
overlight. North aisle is mainly occupied by a wooden
enclosure forming a Sunday school, 1987. East window has
stained-glass dated 1906. South aisle has 2 eastern windows
with stained glass, c1906.
Fittings include panelled octagonal font with stepped wooden
cover with flying buttresses and cross, traceried octagonal
wooden pulpit, traceried stalls and desks with poppyheads,
benches with shaped ends and cast and wrought-iron altar rail,
all C19. Brass eagle lectern dated 1896. Memorials include
tablets and brasses, late C19 and early C20. Outside, to
north, low brick boundary wall with stone coping and concave
curve to north-west porch.
