The Forge) II House. c1700, c1800. Timber-framed and brick roughcast, roof
peg-tiled. L-plan. Single storey and attic. 3-celled
timber-framed range of c1700 with single storeyed brick block
of c1800 projecting forward at SE end. Chimneys are to rear of
central timber bay (probably contemporary) and on SE gable of
timber range, also one on NW side of brick section - all red
brick. 4 window range - to left set back in timber range 2
sashes, glazing bars, 3x4 panes with C20 door and gabled porch
between, 2 attic dormers with C20 casements, glazing bars, 2x3
panes. - to right in forward projection, 2 sashes, glazing
bars, 3x4 panes. Window to right is C20 replacement of a
doorway.
INTERIOR: rudimentary timber-framing, members correctly
squared (no waney edges) but of slight scantling. Bridging
joists with simple chamfer stops, lamb's tongue in NW bay.
Common joists with diminished haunches and pendant soffits.
Partition on ground floor between SE and centre bay with
original door frame. Scantling and jointing designed to bear
two meeting bridging joists over the door head. SE bay with
stair trap in E corner. Roof simple trapped side purlin. attic
doorway now cut through tie-beam between centre and SE bay.
Rear has 2 out-shuts, (1) to NW, deep, with sloping tie-beam
exposed within, slate roof and three C20 wooden casements. (2)
to NE, shallower out-shut with C20 brick wall and C20 long
3-light casement window, peg-tiled roof of main range
continues over. In main roof above a flat roofed C20 dormer
window with 3 casements with top lights. Small gabled addition
to S end has C20 window, casement, with glazing bars, 8x4
panes.
