House, now surgery. 1793, with C20 W side addition. Red brick,
composition and peg tiles, red brick stacks. Plan, square,
double pile with attached irregular W block, late C18 and C20
L plan addition. 2 storeys and cellar.
Front S elevation: principal 3-bay range, dentilled eaves, all
windows and doorways have segmented arched heads, hipped roof,
ground floor flat roofed extension almost full length with
cement cornice and parapet, central outer doorway, doors
2-leaf, fully glazed 4x4 panes. Large tripartite sash window
each side, 1x4, 3x4, 1x4 panes. First floor, outer sash
windows tripartite, 2x4, 3x4, 2x4 panes, central 4x4 sash.
Voussoirs still retain tuck pointing. 2 stacks at side roof
ridges. To W, C20 ground floor addition in house style, red
brick, peg-tiled, 3 bay range with hipped roof at W end,
central bay gabled. 3 similar windows, glazing bars, 4x4
panes.
Rear N elevation: 3 bays, dentilled eaves, windows smaller
than front, somewhat irregular, ground floor doorway has
projecting C19 trellis work, porch flat roofed, bracketed
hood, arched side openings, small C19 casement window 2x3
panes, window W of porch and 3 on first floor, C20 replacement
2-light casement 4x3 panes, also small late C18 similar, 3x2
paned window. Cellar grille W of porch. To W, blank wall of
C19 ground floor unit with C20 addition set deeply behind to
W. Window in house style 4x3 panes.
W end elevation: first floor tripartite window, 1x4, 3x4, 1x4
panes, smaller window 3x3 panes. Ground floor irregular, late
C18 N and C20 S wings both with 4x4 paned sash window between
set back, simple C20 6 panelled door. E end elevation: 3
window range in house style, middle window off-centre to N.
Both floors have outer 4x4 paned windows and central original
tripartite one 1x4,3x4,1x4 panes with some uneven old glass. 2
stone wall plaques with Latin inscriptions, one dated 1793
records rebuilding of house, other in similar style 1963
records conversion to doctors' surgery.
INTERIOR: inner doorway has fielded panelled reveals, late C18
6 panelled door, upper panels glazed. Within house, fielded 6
panel doors and contemporary central dogleg staircase, simple
stick balusters, mahogany handrail. Circular roof-light to
first floor landing. Details of demolition and costing of
1790's work in carpenter's account at Audley End estate.
