SAFFRON WALDEN TL5338 CASTLE STREET

Nos.46 AND 48 II 2 houses. C16, early C19 rear additions, C20 refronting and
refurbishment. Timber framing, plastered and brick, peg and
clay tile roof, also slate. U shaped plan. 3 storeys and
cellars.
N front elevation: 3 bayed red brick frontage, peg-tiled roof,
gable end stacks, c1946, also altered c1986 to appear as a
single house with central street door which, however, leads to
open pasageway between units. Doorway has cornice hood and
overlight, door of 6 panels, concrete lintel over door extra
wide to accommodate 2 doorways of 1946 build. Similar lintels
over windows, were sashes, now casements with glazing bars,
ground and first floor, cross form 4x4 panes, second floor
2-light 4x3 panes, 2 cellar lights blocked in No.46. Rear S
elevation: timber-framed and plastered with plain C20 casement
window on first and second floor to No.46, 3-light 6 paned,
2-light 4 paned, respectively. Ground floor central plain
passageway with early C20 horizontal bead moulded boarding.
Additions, to W, (No.46) 2 mono-pitch early C19 slated
lean-tos. C20 door with upper glazing, 2x3 panes, to E
(No.48), 2 lean-tos at right angles, C19 originally but C20
refurbished with C20 pargetting and clay tiled. All details
C20. E side, door with upper glazing 3x3 panes, flanking sash
windows 3x4 and 2x3 panes. S end, boarded `stable' door and
bay window of double sashes.
INTERIOR: No.46. Outer timber framing of `high' end of small
medieval house continuing from Nos 44 and 42 (qv). Jowled
posts, wall plates, stud braced rear wall and wattle grooves,
mortice for axial floor joist, wall plate under first floor
window. No.48. Timber framing of small open hall bay similar
height to No.46 but probably associated with No.50 (qv). E end
corner posts and partition frame with mid rail mortices for
front and back wall remain. Parts of central open truss
survive. Front principal post with deep rising mortice for
brace to removed tie-beam and rear wall plate with tie-beam
dovetail joint. remains. Also E end frame common with No.50
has pattern of peg holes probably for a C17 weaving (warping)
frame.
