Shall be upgraded to II* (Star) and the description shill be amended to read:- Detached farmhouse. Second half C15 or early C16; altered early C17 (floor
and stack inserted); with C19 re-fashioning and C20 repairs. Stone walls,
rendered and washed. Thatch roof. Open-hall house with through-passage plan.
Roof gabled with C20 brick stacks at left-hand gable, ridge left of centre,
and at right-hand gable. 1½ storeys. 3 windows, 2-light wood casements with
horizontal glazing-bars, wood cills and lintels, C19 and C20. Three gabled
half-dormers over with thatch roofs, C19. Front door, left of centre, plank-
and-muntin door, wood frame. C20 porch on wood columns, gabled thatch canopy
over.
Rear: central 3-light ground-floor window is C17, having timber lintel,
wood frame with moulded jambs and chamfered mullions (moulded on the inside),
lead cames tied to wood stanchions and old glass. Interior: a blocked former doorway (now with window) opposite existing doorway
indicates position of probable through-passage. The most important internal
feature is the late-medieval roof structure, supported on base crucks: 4 principal
rafter trusses with cambered collars; large-scantling, diagonally-set ridge-
piece; wall-plate and 2 sets of chamfered, scarf-jointed trenched purlins;
2 tiers of chamfered, curved wind braces, most surviving; smoke blackening
throughout; at truss near inserted stack, traces of original partition wall
below collar (which would have formed one side of the through-passage); left-
hand gable is of wattle and daub. C17 features include the central stack
with its ground-floor fireplace which has a deep timber lintel with chamfered,
triangular-arched soffit; the compartmented ceiling in central room with deeply-
chamfered beams; and the flooring over the 2 right-hand rooms (altered). ------------------------------------ TRENT
