Gretton Farmhouse
4.7.60 - II* Farmhouse. C16 and C17. Limestone ashlar, upper floors, front, rendered
on timber framing, stone slate roof with coped end gables and ashlar stacks
with moulded cappings and skirts. Main block has two full height gables
to symmetrical front with through-passage, and deep back gabled wing, left,
also C20 extension with flat roof, back right. Three storeys, 2-windowed,
in gables 1:2:1 oriels on double console brackets over 1:3:1 oriels on
triple console brackets and with slate roofs, all with diagonal leading;
at ground floor, below an offset in the wall, with single slate coping or
string course, 4-light stone chamfer mullion casements with king mullions,
that to right of door deeper than to left. Centrally 6-panel door set to
front of elliptical arch in stopped drip over deep panel with date 1656.
Left gable includes small arched stair light, and 2-light chamfered mullion
casement with stopped drip. Back gable wall has some stone slate hanging
in upper level. A graffito representing a knight on a horse is carved on
a stone, low right, in the main front. Interior has very fine extremely
flat 4-centred Tudor arch stone fireplace with decorated spandrels, but
including carefully matched poured concrete central section; to right of
this blocked 2-light mullioned window; another fireplace, left, with large
wood bressummer. Both sides ofcross passage with timber framed partitions,
and framing in back wall. 3-light chamfered mullion window with drip now
looks into new kitchen extension. A very fine survival.
