Parish Church. C15, with C16 north aisle and some window tracery renewed in the
C19. Coursed rubble conglomerate with some flint, and Beer stone dressing
internally. West tower, nave, south porch, north aisle, chancel and sanctuary, the
roof slated.
West tower: unbuttressed, of one stage, but 3 builds; lower courses containing much
flint with limestone quoins; about 3 metres above ground level large conglomerate
coursed blocks; with C19 upper courses and battlementing. Square headed 2-light
belfry openings; 3-light Perpendicular west window with hood mould and head
terminals. West doorway with wavy moulding surround.
North aisle: west window, 3-light Perpendicular; north aisle north windows with
three 3-light square-headed windows, shallow cusping, that look early C16; north
doorway, square-headed and chamfered; east window, 3-light, Perpendicular.
Chancel: east window, looks mid C19, 3-light, Perpendicular.
Nave, south wall with much disturbed masonry; 2 C19 square-headed 2-light windows;
traces of former rood screen stair turret, now dismantled, where a vertical masonry
joint clearly visible. Flat roofed porch with parapet, partially rebuilt, but
retaining outer moulded arch, and a frieze of quatrefoils bearing a now largely
obliterated legend including the name 'Johannes....' inner doorway, chamfered with
pyramid stop.
Interior: nave and chancel structurally undivided; 4-bay, north arcade, bays wide
and low, piers with wavy moulding and moulded bases; capitals crisply carved with
shields and foliage, one with armorial devices that include the duchy of Cornwall
spread-eagle; all looks early C16. Tower arch with chamfer and run-out stops.
Roofs: ceiled, canted to nave and chancel, undecorated barrel to aisle.
Front: north-east chapel, octagonal stem with pyramid stops, and a later bowl.
Screen: across nave only; 8 bays, each bay with coupled lights with ogival
cinquefoiled heads, and richly carved spandrels. Wainscotting similar, but tracery
heads are not ogival. Coving, with painted motifs of Renaissance character; single
vine-leaf cornice frieze. Evidence of ancient paint; the screen has been recently
(1985) restored.
Glass: 2 late medieval (probably early C16) figures in the top lights of the north
aisles, east window, of St John and St Michael.
