TL 8422-8522 COGGESHALL CHURCH STREET
(north-west side) 9/42 Nos. 29 and 31
31.10.66 (formerly listed as
Nos. 29/31 (Red
House)) GV II House, now 2 flats. C17 or earlier, altered in C18 and C19. Timber framed and
plastered, with facade of red brick in Flemish bond, roofed with handmade red
plain tiles. Main range facing SE with 3 adjacent short wings to rear, forming
a rectangular plan. The middle wing is of narrower span than the others. One
axial stack in left wing and one in middle wing; C20 external stack to right of
right wing. C18/early C19 single-storey extension to right of main range, with
flat roof. C19 extension of red brick to rear of left wing, its axis at right
angles to that of the wing. C19 single-storey lean-to extension with slate roof
to rear of the other wings. 2 storeys. Ground floor, 6 C18/early C19 sashes of
2+4 lights, each with a segmental head and arch of gauged brick. First floor, 5
similar sashes, and one blank recess above door. Off-centre half-glazed door in
doorcase with panelled jambs and soffit, eared and moulded architrave,
projecting false keystones and moulded pediment on scrolled brackets; 2 stone
steps with 2 cast iron bootscrapers. Plain band at first-floor level, returning
to right on extension. The brick facade extends across the small extension to
the right, apparently unjointed, and has tuck pointing of high quality which in
places disregards the original coursing. Moulded eaves cornice. Late C19 false
framing on right return and rear gables. Late C19 moulded and indented
bargeboards on right gable. 2 early C19 sashes of 12 lights on first floor of
rear elevation. Deeply chamfered axial beam exposed over entrance-hall, boxed
in both adjacent rooms, not extending to right room. Folding shutters present
in 2 ground-floor front rooms, missing from the third. 4-panel internal doors,
one with lincrusta in panels. Walls lined with plain softwood boarding, and
partly with canvas, a rare survival. Early C19 quarter-turn stair with wreathed
and moulded handrail, stick balusters (some replaced) and scrolled tread-ends.
One Art Nouveau grate on first floor; late C19 cast iron grate on first floor of
rear extension. Smoke-blackened rafters, pegged at the apices, over the narrow
rear wing; no access to other roofs. The frame is mainly concealed by C18 and
C19 finishes.
