ST02SE STAWLEY CP 6/39 Church of St Michael 25.1.56
- I Church Cll, with C13 and C16 alterations and additions. Red sandstone random
rubble masonry, Ham stone dressings, slate roof. Nave, chancel, West tower,
South porch. 3 stage early C16 tower, moulded plinth, embattled parapet, angled
buttresses, stair turret, 3-light perpendicular window, strip of quatrefoil
decoration with shields inscribed "Pray for the soules of Henry Hines and Agnes
his Wyffe AD1522", above 4-centred arch doorway. East end, unusual survival of
square headed 3-light window with drip mould C16, South side chancel 2-light
windows and priest's door C13, 2 and 4 light perpendicular windows flanking
porch, late C17 cross window with leaded panes on North wall. Gabled C14 porch
with round headed entrance, C14 moulded doorway with fine C13 door with
ornamental hinges. Interior: rendered. Chancel set slightly off-centre, barrel
vault with moulded wooden ribs, same with bosses in nave. Octagonal font on
octagonal shaft set into square base with flatened broaches, C14. Box pews,
pulpit with tester, baluster altar rails, panelled dado in chancel, all C18,
Royal coat of arms over chancel arch. Lords Prayer and Credo inscribed on wooden
panels 1826 North wail, Ten Commandments in the tower. Unusual in the absence of
C19 alterations; fine C18 fittings.
