Details
ILLOGAN TEHIDY PARK SW 64 SW 4/207 Coachhouse and stable yard approx. 200 metres south-east 26.1.89 of Tehidy House GV II Coachhouse and stable yard to Tehidy House, now workshops and stores, etc. Probably c.1790, with addition in later C19; altered. Rendered brick with roofs mostly of scantle slate. The C18 building is L-shaped, with long ranges forming the south and west sides of the yard, while the C19 coachhouse forms the east side. The south and west ranges are of 2 low storeys; the south has a basket- arched wagon doorway close to the angle, now blocked, a wide square-headed doorway near the centre (perhaps formerly a similar wagon entrance) and various other doors and windows, including some 6-pane sashes with lay-bars only, one 20-pane sash, and 3 circular pitching holes at 1st floor; the west has 2 doorways near the angle, a series of 7 stable doorways (the first 3 covered by a prominent open-sided shelter), and 3 circular pitching holes at 1st floor (the first containing the surreal remains of a clock). Roofs hipped at outer ends (and partly damaged, partly replaced with corrugated sheet), with 2 chimneys at front of south range. The C19 coachhouse on the east side is rectangular and 2 unequal storeys and 6 bays, with corner pilasters and 1st floor sill-band; the ground floor is an arcade of basket-arched wagon doorways with vermiculated keystones and an impost band (the 4 in the centre partly blocked), with a domestic doorway at the right-hand end; the 1st floor has segmental-headed 4- pane sashed windows (mostly damaged at time of survey 1988) under gablets with cockscomb finials; the roof has gable chimneys and 2 ridge chimneys (that on the left cut down). Interior: doorway at right-hand end opens onto staircase leading to domestic accommodation at 1st floor. History: associated with later Bassets' ruinous interest in horses (see Tangye Tehidy and the Bassets (1984) pp 105-6).
