ST BREWARD HIGHER PENQUITE SX 07 NE 5/208 Disused farmhouse at Higher - Penquite, shippens directly to east and adjoining wall on north II

Disused farmhouse, range of shippens and adjoining wall between the 2 ranges on north. 1618 (datestone). Granite rubble. Slate roof with gable ends, renewed with asbestos slates on right hand side of farmhouse. Granite gabled coping and stone rubble end stack on left gable end. Plan: Overall 'U' shaped plan with farmhouse on west, shippens on east and wall connecting gable ends of both ranges on north. House probably originally of 3 room and through passage plan; the lower end on left heated by an end stack, the hall heated by an axial stack backing onto the higher right hand side of the passage and the inner room apparently unheated. Small porch, possibly partly rebuilt or added with arch reset, to rear of the passage. The chimney stacks and cross wall on the higher side of the passage have probably been inserted or rebuilt, suggesting that the house may possibly have earlier origins. However, as the roof structure is apparently C18 and C20, although not fully accessible, there is little evidence to confirm this. Possibly contemporary with the house is a range of shippens, built parallel, about 10 metres to the east directly to the rear of the lower end, passage and hall. The right hand end to south has possibly been rebuilt or added. A low stone rubble wall connects the lower left hand gable ends of the house and shippens, forming the third side of an internal courtyard. In circa C18 or C19 the house was divided into 2 dwellings; the left hand house on north comprising the lower end and passage with fireplace inserted into the passage, back-to-back with the hall fireplace. The second house on right comprised a 2 room and central entrance plan, the left hand room heated by the hall stack and the right hand room apparently unheated. Later service outshot added to rear of higher end. Exterior: House of 2 storeys with asymmetrical 2 window front. Left hand side with 4-pane sash and circa C18 or C19 stone rubble porch. Inner entrance has round headed granite arch, apparently of a single piece of granite, with chamfered ashlar granite jambs. 2 window openings flank door opening to right. First floor with 4-pane sash on left and window opening to right. Datestone of 1618 in left hand gable end. Rear Elevation: facing courtyard has gabled stone rubble porch to rear of passage with segmental chamfered granite arch and inner door with 3 centred granite arch with hollow chamfered jambs and simple moulded stops. 3-light mullion window lights rear elevation of lower end; the mullions have been removed and the glazing comprises early small leaded panes of glass. 2-light mullion window on first floor. Interior: through passage intact with fireplace inserted in cross wall on higher side on left with C19 corbelled chimneypiece. Partition on lower side of passage probably removed. Left hand room divided by later timber screen and heated by very large, partly blocked fireplace with hollow chamfered granite lintel and mid C19 cast iron grate. Ceiling beams replaced in circa C18. Hall and inner room largely gutted with partitions and ceiling beams removed. Hall fireplace with hollow chamfered jambs and lintel, C19 brick segmental arch to adjoining blocked fireplace and remains of cloam oven. Front wall slightly curved on inner side near fireplace. Roof structure: left hand range with circa C18 roof structure, the principals halved, lap-jointed and pegged at the apices and the collars lapped and pegged onto the face of the principals. Roof structure not fully accessible. Roof structure above right hand side replaced in C20. Shippen to east: 2 storeys with openings partly altered. Granite segmental arch possibly reset in west elevation and narrow ventilation slit on east elevation. Interior: ceiling beams replaced and roof structure not accessible at time of survey (1986). Segmental granite chamfered arch in stone rubble wall which connects 2 ranges on north.
