ST 66 SE PRISTON C.P. PRISTON MILL 2/37 Priston Mill and attached pond, dam
and walls G.V. II Watermill on an ancient site, now all late C18/early C19. Rubble with freestone
dressings and quoins, ashlar, double roman tile roofs with raised coped verges.
4 storeys, 2 windows all 3-light, outer 2 shuttered in segmental heads with
keystones, ground floor has similar central door and double doors to right, all
under 2 gables with obelisk finials; north elevation has 3 storeys, 2 windows, as
front but only 2-light, at left, up flight of 3 steps are similar double doors
under C20 lean-to porch, at right down steps is opening to wheel pit; south
elevation has 4 storey, top floor blank, 3 windows, all 2-light casements as
elsewhere, to right one is blocked, one half blocked, to left is wheel pit
opening; west elevation shows only 2 storeys, similar details, windows above,
doors below, remainder, including former window heads, obscured by pond dam walls,
adjacent to mill and about 8 metres westward on the north side these are of
ashlar, remainder flanking long, thin pond are of rubble. Interior: large cast
iron overshot pitchback wheel drives complete works, wallower on oak shaft drives
great spur wheel which drives pair of stones above; hoist traps remain; all in
working order.
