Church of St Oswald GV
II* Church. C12 origins, C17, restored 1885. Ashlar, coursed squared stone,
graduated slate roofs. Nave with bellcote, south porch and north aisle,
chancel also with north aisle. Nave: 3 bays. To centre a C17 south porch,
gabled with chamfered 4-centred-arched doorway, 3 ball finials to stone
coping. To its left a chamfered flat headed 2-light window with segment
headed lights and incised spandrels, to right of porch similar window of
3 lights. Early C19 wall memorial to far left. Stone coping. West gable
has rubble base, offset angle buttresses and central pilaster buttress.
Chamfered bands at eaves level and half way up. Central 2-light flat-headed
window with arched lights and incised spandrels. Above a C17 double
bellcote which has rusticated stonework with 4-centred-arched openings,
moulded cornice, pyramidal gable with squat obelisk on top, flanked by
2 similar obelisks. North aisle: C19, 4 bays. Offset angle buttresses.
Flat-headed chamfered ogee-traceried windows of 2 lights, except that to
right of left-hand bay which is of 4 lights. Chamfered lancet to west end.
Stone copings. Chancel: C19, 2 bays; diagonal offset eastern buttresses.
South side: to left-hand bay a 2-light flat-headed chamfered window with
round-headed lights. To right a tall thin chamfered 1-light flat-headed
opening. Stone coping, gable cross. East window: 3-lights, in shallow
pointed arch, the lights are stepped with pointed-arch heads, hoodmould.
Wall memorials below. Interior: C19 3-bay north arcade with octagonal piers
and moulded pointed arches, chancel arch similar. Medieval monument,
recumbent effigy of knight, with bare head, chain mail, long mantle, crossed
legs and large shield, feet on lion, c1320-30. Fine early C18 carved marble
monument to George Laverson with pilasters and open pediment with 3 cherubs
