II
House, mainly C16, altered in C18 and C19. Timber framed, partly plastered, partly with exposed framing, partly clad with painted brick, roofed with handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays aligned approx. N-S, aspect E, with external chimney stacks to N and W, and internal chimney stack in S bay. To NW of it, 3 bays aligned E-W, with internal chimney stack between W bay and middle bays. Small building in NE angle, connecting the 2 ranges. W extension at S end, C19, and stair tower in the NW angle. Single-storey lean-to extensions to W of main range, C19. 2 storeys with attics. E elevation jettied with 3 exposed plain brackets, underbuilt in S bay, all plastered. Plain boarded door and 2-window range of tripartite sashes of 2-4-2 lights, late C19. In connecting block, one double-hung sash window of 16 lights on ground floor, one of 6 lights on first floor, both late C18/early C19. The N elevation is jettied with exposed joists and studding, underbuilt in the E bay only. The N-S range has richly moulded transverse and axial beams and joists, exposed studding with C20 alterations, rear hearth rebuilt in the C20. The roof was of crownpost construction originally, rebuilt in clasped purlin form. It has been dismantled from another site and re-assembled here with some differences, and appears to be a guildhall or other public building of c.1500, originally with at least 3 bays undivided on each floor, re-erected as a domestic building in the second half of the C16. The E-W range is plain, narrower in span, and original on this site. RCHM 4.
