SU 77SE ST NICHOLAS HURST LODGE ROAD
(east side) 5/16 Hurst House 26.1.67 II Large country house. Built by Richard Ward in 1530, rebuilt in 1847 by the
Rev. A.A.Cameron, Vicar of Hurst, incorporating some old material. Brick,
stone strings, old tile roof, large chimney stacks. 2 storeys and attic.
North front:- double gabled main part, the left hand gable with 4-light stone
mullioned attic window, 4-light stone mullioned and transomed windows on lower
floors, the right hand gable set back with 2-light mullioned attic window, lower
floors similar to left hand gable. To left hand an irregular section with
entrance porch. South front:- left hand wing set back with gable facing west
and chimney stack on south side with octagonal and rectangular shafts, moulded
and offset heads. Main part double gabled, each gable with vent slit at attic
level, irregular first floor windows, 2 large 10 and 12-light stone mullioned
and transomed windows on ground floor, door in angle of projecting gabled wing
to right hand, which has a 2 storey angular bay facing south with stone cresting
and hipped lead roof, 6-light mullioned and transomed windows on front, 2-light
similar at sides.
Some upper windows have moulded wood mullions, probably from the original
building. Interior: Dining room contains elaborate C17 oak panelling,
fluted pilasters, carved caps and entablature, carved frieze, and a stone
chimney piece, 2 tiers of similar design. The Tudor-style plaster ceiling
dates from the re-building. In the study a C17 bolection moulded fireplace
surround, and in the drawing room a C16 marble chimney piece. In the hall
large moulded and stop chamfered oak door frames.
