738/7/169 DURNGATE STREET
08-MAY-75 19
(Formerly listed as:
DUMGATE STREET
19) GV II
House, C18 and probably predating 1781. The building appears to have undergone alteration to serve as a shop during the C19, and is believed to continue in commercial use (2009). MATERIALS: colour-washed brick, with a pitched tile roof and two brick chimney stacks. PLAN: The southern portion of the building has undergone considerable change since the publication of the OS map of 1889. In that year, the property was shown as a rough L-plan, with outbuildings extending the south-east wing, and filling in the junction between the two wings. By 1902 a south-west extension had been built, but most of this had been removed by 1929, leaving a C-plan similar to the footprint of the building as it exists today (2009). EXTERIOR: A two-storey building of colour-washed brick, with a pitched tile roof and two brick chimney stacks. On the first floor, two widely-spaced windows with flush-framed 6/6 sashes. On the ground floor, the central doorway has been incorporated in a C19 shop front; the door and three-paned window framed by panelled pilasters and an entablature. The door is part-glazed, with two moulded panels below. To the left of the doorway, a second shop window, this one with two panes, surmounted by an entablature. The front elevation of No. 18 extends to meet that of No. 19; a narrow door leads to what appears to be a passage between the two buildings.
INTERIOR: Not inspected. HISTORY: Durngate Street is shown as almost completely built up on both sides in Hutchins's map of 1771; though the street also contains later buildings, No. 19 Durngate Street is one of a varied group (Nos 18-20) thought to pre-date 1771. Originally built as a house, the building is believed to have been converted to a shop during the late C18 or early C19. The neighbouring building, No. 18, also converted, appears to have reverted to solely domestic use later in the C19. REASON FOR DESIGNATION: 19 Durngate Street is designated at Grade II for the following principal reasons:
* Architectural: Externally, a noteworthy example of a modest, two-storey Dorchester house of the C18, with later alterations demonstrating the building's conversion to commercial use during the C19
* Group Value: With adjacent houses at 18 and 20 Durngate Street, and with other nearby listed buildings
