AVETON GIFFORD A379 SX 64 NE (off north side) 4/16 Wakeham Farmhouse - II Large farmhouse. C17, with large late C18 extension. Rubble, painted rubble, some rendered rubble, asbestos-cement slate roofs. A two-part building, with an L-plan C17 block with stair turret at lower level; later block set at higher level, with hipped outer end and swept-down back slope, a symmetrical central stair hall unit. Garden, principal front, has, to left, hipped left end, 2-storey 2-window unit with C20 casements and glazed door; to right, 2-storey 3-window, 3-light casement at each level, central 6-pane sash (formerly 12-pane) and tripartite sash at each level, to right of central door in C20 flat-roofed porch. Deep coved eaves to higher block which has large store gable stack at junction with earlier building. Top gable, set against roof slope, plain. Back has 3-light casement to left of plank door under flat hood, and a 3-light glazing bar casement with mullions all to swept down roof, and with large rendered stack. To right a gabled stair turret with 2-light glazing bar casement above a lean-to roof over C20 door and casement. Far right is main gable of C17 block, with casement top left in gable, and small brick gable stack. Return wall facing the A379 road, has two C20 casements. Interior: the early wing has a tight square newel staircase with rope-hoist balusters, heavy handrail and string, and a polyhedron newel terminal. Some good plank and edge mould doors. Later block has dog-leg stair with turned balusters, probably early C18. Main room left of entry has 3 transverse beams, big rebuilt open fire; right room has cupboard to basket-handle arch, panelling. Panelled shutters, moulded cornice.
