Details
ST OO NE KENTISBEARE SILVER STREET (north side) Kentisbeare 8/116 Nos 4, 5 6 and 7 5.4.66 II Row of 3 cottages (nos. 4 and 6 are now a single dwelling). Possibly early C16 with later alterations and extensions. Roughcast cob on stone footings; thatched roof, hipped to left, adjoining Walnut Cottage to right. Originally a 3-room, through-passage plan house, the service end to the left of the passage (and now divided between nos 5 and 6); the building is of jointed cruck construction: although the roof timbers that are visible have been painted black, it is clear that the building was open to roof (at least in part) for the service end first floor is jettied into the hall. The inner room roof space is inaccessible; no 6 not inspected internally. Hall floor inserted probably in the C17, and the inserted stacks may also date from this period: hall heated by axial stone stack backing onto passage; inner room heated by stone end stack; the axial stack between nos 6 and 7 was probably a former end stack to the service end before the erection of further rooms (cottages) in the C18 or C19 (now part of no. 6 and no. 7). Winder stairs to rear of hall; another beside the inner room end stack; winder stairs to no. 7 and probably to no. 6. 2 storeys. Exterior Front: irregular fenestration; the inner room and the chamber above (no. 4) retain their C17 windows. First floor: 2 casement windows of 2-lights and one of 3 to service end and extension (nos. 5, 6 and 7), all C19; hall chamber with 2-light casement window in pegged surround, set lower than the others, but with its lintel at eaves level; inner room chamber with 3-light window with ovolo-moulded mullions, jambs and surround. 2-light casement window, 8 leaded panels per light, to extreme right marks stairs. Ground floor: 2 C20 two-light windows to no. 7, C19 casements to no. 6: former service end with small 3-light casement window, 6 leaded panes per light, with C18 catch; small 4-light window to hall, 3 of the lights with 12 leaded panes; inner room with 4-light window, with ovolo moulded surround, jambs and mullions. Simple porches. Rear: brick and stone pantiled lean-to to no. 4.C20 single-storey additon to no. 6. Cob, stone and brick outbuilding to no. 7 partially weatherboarded, with some posts older than the C19 roof. Interior: passage, subsequently narrowed, the original lower end screen headbeam surviving in left-hand room of no. 5 with muntin mortices; doorway from passage into hall with cranked lintel. Service end jettied into hall. Deeply chamfered cross ceiling beam to hall, with rounded stops, tenoned into jointed cruck truss; 3 cross ceiling beams to inner room, are unchamfered, the others chamfered with hollow step stops. End fireplace with chamfered and unstopped lintel (concealed); newel stair originally lit by end windows (replaced by C19 front window when adjacent dwelling built), the embrasures of which are visible internally. There is probably a screen surviving between hall and inner room, now concealed. Roof: 3 jointed crucks, with morticed and pegged apex carpentry (Alcock type F2).
