Details

LOSTWITHIEL QUAY STREET, Lostwithiel SX 15 NW 10/124 Shire House and attached wall and - gate GV II

House. Early-mid C19, incorporating earlier structure formerly part of the Duchy Palace group; some late alterations. Slatestone rubble, rendered, rubble with Pentewan stone to rear. Asbestos slate roof with gable end to left and slightly bellcast hip to right end, stacks removed. Central entrance to 2-room plan, with central passage with stair to right; formerly heated by gable end stack to left and rear lateral stack to right. 2 storeys and attic, 3 windows, ground floor has central panelled and glazed door with semi-circular hood on brackets, 20-pane sash with segmental head to right, early. C19 half-glazed door to left with pilasters and cornice, Gothic glazing, sidelights and overlight. First floor has two 20-pane sashes and central 16-pane sash, 2 flat- roofed dormers, each with 12-pane sash. Right side has a wooden oriel at first floor with 4-pane sash to front and sides. Rear has 2 C20 windows at ground floor. The rear wall has the springing for 2 stone arches at the front and rear entrance of the lane to the rear of the house; the front arch is pointed, with chamfered Pentewan stone dressings, rear arch in slatestone rubble with Pentewan stone springings. To the right side of the rear of the house, Pentewan stone quoins at ground floor level. Attached to front right, a slatestone rubble embattled wall, about 2 metres high and about 10 metres long, fronting Quay Street. C20 wrought iron gate to left. Interior The 2-room plan has been partitioned in late C20, 2 segmental arches remain in rear wall to right, of uncertain origin or function, the rear wall is of a thickness comparable to other buildings within the Duchy Palace group, with splayed reveal to the window at ground floor to left. Early C19 winder stair, with circular stick balusters and ramped, moulded wreathed handrail, with barley sugar twist slender newel. At first floor, 6 panelled doors and marble chimneypiece to rear of first floor room to right. The house is said to have been the prison governor's house for the Stannary Prison, in the C18 or early C19.
