CARN BREA TINCROFT ROAD SW 64 SE (north side, off) 5/162 Pump engine house to Chappel's shaft of Old Cook's Kitchen Mine at SW 664 405

GV II Pump engine house to former copper and tin mine; now derelict. Probably early to mid C19. Uncoursed granite rubble with quoins, bob wall of dressed granite blocks; now roofless. Rectangular plan on north-south axis, with bob wall to south. Three stages; round-headed driver's window in bob wall, with granite voussoirs and keystone, various square-headed windows with wooden or granite lintels including larger window (or door) in rear wall, the masonry beneath it collapsed, and 2 small beam holes above this window; tie-plates and straps to front and rear walls. History: Cook's Kitchen mine was one of the earliest mines in the area, known to have been working for copper in early C18, and also one of the deepest (reaching 3000 feet), and most profitable; closed in 1913. Reference: J.Trounson Mining in Cornwall Volume One (1985). Forms prominent group with its detached chimney to the north and winding engine to the east (q.v.)
