SW 63 SW BREAGE Pengelly Barton Farmhouse, front 4/11 garden walls and gate piers GV II

Farmhouse, front garden walls and gate piers. C17 or earlier, remodelled and partly rebuilt in the C18 and remodelled slightly in circa the late C19. Granite and elvan ashlar front in diminishing courses, dressed granite sills and lintels, otherwise granite and elvan rubble with dressed granite quoins, jambstones and lintels, some C17 dressed granite features in situ and some C17 dressed granite reused. Slurried scantle slate roof over main part with tall brick chimneys over gable ends, the stack on the right hand gable end is outbuilt. Gable-ended asbestos slate roof at rear sweeping lower to right (south), brick chimney over gable end and reused C17 hand made clay ridge tile with ball finial. Plan : overall L-shaped. Probably originally a 3 room through passage plan with lower end right. (The original rear doorway now blocked). Wing containing stair well and parlour at right angles to the rear left probably built in the first half of the C17. In the C18, the front wall, gable ends, and part of the back wall rebuilt, refloored and reroofed; the parlour wing extended by widening to right (south) and some, possibly all the principal rooms panelled; the front main range of the house was remodelled internally creating 2 nearly equal reception rooms flanking a central cross passage. At the right hand gable end is a lean to, probably wash house, approached from the house by a doorway from the right hand room. In the C19, the roof of the rear wing probably remodelled, floors of right hand part replaced and stairs renewed. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 5 window west front with central doorway. C19 4 panel door with top panels later glazed, plain overlight. Window over doorway blocked, otherwise circa late C19 4 pane horned sashes in unaltered C18 openings. Rear retains some of the original C17 walling with straight chamfered lintel over the blocked doorway. The left hand (north) wall of the wing has the original Slight hollow chamfered parlour window, rebated for external shutters and with 1 mullion surviving. At the far right, below a tall stair window is a similar C17 2-light mullioned window with mullion removed. The stair window is a circa late C19 - early C20 sash with coloured glass in the marginal panes. The C17 walling continues to the left of the parlour wing until joining at the back of a C19 outbuilding with a ragged joint so presumably originally went further. Interior retains some C18 features including some full height fielded panelling and moulded ceiling cornices at either side of the cross passage and on 2 walls of the left hand room; some C18 doors and more C18 fielded panelling surmounted by a dentilled cornice to the partition wall of the right hand room under the outshut of the wing. The circa late C19 dog leg stair has turned balusters and turned finials over the newel posts (possibly inspired by the probably C17 stair that was removed). Roof structures not inspected but probably C18 over the front range. The C17 garden walls adjoin at either side of the front and return to enclose a rectangular garden with a carriage width gateway aligned with the front door. The rubble walls are surmounted by dressed granite copings with roll moulded ridged copings. The probably C17 very debased Doric gate piers are surmounted by steep pyramidal finials. The gate piers stand on tapered bases and have echinus moulded caps and may have originally been part of a gatehouse, porch or even a colonnade as at Godolphin qv. Standing near the front wall is a granite cider apple crusher complete with semi-spherical crushing wheel. This farmhouse has clearly been an important house both in the C17 and C18 and has been little altered since the C180 The surviving C17 features, the mullioned windows, the garden walls and gate piers are particularly notable. Furthermore, the symmetrical C18 ashlar front and the other C18 features are of very good quality.
