GV II House, now bakery, hairdressing saloon and house. C17, extended in C19. Timber
framed, plastered, roofed, with handmade red clay tiles. 3 bays facing S, and
3-bay crosswing to right, extending to rear, with internal stack at the
junction. Single-storey bakery extension to rear of left end, with large C19
baker's oven beyond, with Cl9 stack, roofed with red clay pantiles. Lean-to
extension between rear wings, forming a catslide with the main roof. Small C20
extension to rear of right wing. 2 storeys and attics. Ground floor, C20
splayed shop window, 2 C20 casements. First floor, 3 C20 casements. 2 C20
half-glazed doors. Modillioned cornice below eaves. Royal Exchange firemark
attached to front elevation below eaves. Jowled posts. Chamfered transverse
beams with lamb's tongue stops, plain joists of vertical section. Above right
first-floor room, chamfered transverse beam with enriched lamb's tongue stops,
supported on elaborately carved projections with serrated lower edges, an
unusual feature in a first-floor situation. Original newel stair to attic.
Clasped purlin roofs. The coal-fired oven, still in regular use at the time of
survey, May 1985, is a rare feature.
