STAINTON AND THORNTON ROAD NZ 41 SE (4713) THORNTON (west side)

5/130 Walls, gates and gatepiers to garden of No 15 - II Wrongly shown on OS map as Kell Gate. Garden wall, early/mid C18. Red brick, with curved-topped stone copings at south end of east wall. Iron gates. Wall c4.5 metres high, on 2 sides of garden of mid-C20 house. Off-centre gatepiers with heavily-moulded stone cornices and shallow ogee-domed caps, in east wall. Mid-C20 2-leaf gates. Similar left and right intermediate piers and plain pier at right end. North wall, stepped up from east to west, had plain intermediate piers. Prominent in views along Thornton Road. Originally enclosed kitchen gardens of Thornton Hall, demolished c.1800. House (No 15) is not of special interest.
