Includes: Nos.5-8 LANSDOWNE PLACE Hoe. Part of planned terrace of houses. Mid C19. Stucco with stucco detail; dry slate or asbestos slate roofs behind parapet with moulded entablature with modillion cornice; 2:1:2:1 roof dormers; deep brick end stacks with many old clay pots. Double-depth plan. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attic over basement; each house a 2-window range. Original stucco detail includes: channelled rustication and voussoirs to segmental arches to Nos 258 and 260; string above, and sill strings to upper floors; openings with pilasters, moulded entablature and cornices to 1st floor and moulded eared architraves to 2nd floor. Original 12-pane hornless 2nd-floor sashes to Nos 258 and 262, otherwise altered sashes or later horned sashes; pilastered and pedimented porch with modillion cornice and panelled sides, to left of each house; 2-pane overlights and panelled and glazed doors. INTERIOR: not inspected but likely to be of interest. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: forecourt walls and steps; original wrought-iron railings to No.262, with arrow-head finials to shafts, acorn finials to stanchions and anthemion heads to newels. Included as part of an important planned group of terraces and villas by Foulston and his pupil Wightwick on the Hoe, a scheme which placed Plymouth at the forefront of town planning in the early/mid C19.
