HAWKSHEAD MAIN STREET SD 3598 SW (East side) 12/135 Former Solicitor's 25.3.70 office (formerly listed as Magistrates Courts, Premises occupied by W.H. Heelis & Son (adjoining Magistrates Courts Offices)

GV II

National Trust store. Probably C17 but refaced C19. Stucco with slate roof. 2 storeys, 3 bays. Top frieze and deep bracketed eaves; quoins. 1st bay has 1st floor over passage leading to Red Lion Yard. Ground floor has canted bay window with small-paned glazing and iron rails to 2nd bay; 3rd bay has window with paired sashes with glazing bars and horns. 1st floor has windows with label moulds which are sashed with glazing bars, that to 2nd bay with horns; 3rd bay has Venetian window, sashed with glazing bars and horns. Entrance has architrave and 4-panel door. Lateral stack and gable-end stacks. Rear has horizontally sliding sash to attic window. Rear wing has recess to ground floor with slate cellar access, 3-light wooden-mullioned windows to 2 sides of recess; former open gallery above; now infilled with glazed bricks. Interior said to have C18 fittings (National Trust survey report). Rear wing adjoins No.1 Red Lion Yard (q.v.). Office once owned by W. Heelis, husband of Beatrix Potter. Property of the National Trust, the gift of Beatrix Potter.
