House. C15/C16 with C18 and early C20 extensions, the latter by Gambier Parry for The Hon. Lady Du Cane, at which time items bought from nearby Braxted Park House q.v. 2/46 by Lady Du Cane were incorporated into the building. Timber framed original ranges. Red brick faced, red brick built later range. Red plain tiled roofs. 3 red brick chimney stacks visible from front (south). 2 gabled ranges, that to left original, to right the C20 extensions. To rear is the hipped C18 range. 2 storeys and cellar. Both gables with 2 storey hipped roofed bays that to right hipped to gable apex, bargeboards to left gable. 1:1 window range of small paned vertically sliding sashes, also a small light to first floor of left gable. Central small paned door in moulded surround. Lean-to bay to left return and 2 C18 tall vertically sliding sash windows with round heads to C18 range. The red brick wall attached to right with stone Du Cane eagles to gate pillars and terminating in a small red brick and tiled summer house. Interior features include: the original build with lozenge stop chamfered bridging joists, heavy wall studs with halved arch braces. Jowled storey posts, arched wind braces to roof rafters. Halved and bridled top plate scarf. Inglenook fireplace with curved fireplace to first floor. A second similar bedroom fireplace with the ground floor opening now blocked. Iron fireback 1721, reputed to come from Hurstmonceaux Castle. Fine library, plastered, with pine mouldings from elsewhere. Ionic pilasters, carved cornice, moulded and carved 6 panelled doors, central recessed panel to wall between carved bookshelves which contain the original library of Lady Du Cane. Green marble fire surround, carved and moulded with sunken centre arch, carved brackets to shelf now with 3 light mirror over, moulded and carved dado. Hall and corridor with C17/C18 square panelling probably from Braxted Park. Fine staircase with 2 turned balusters to each tread, moulded open string. Modillion cornice over. Original shutters to round headed window. Master bedroom with moulded surrounds, wainscots, etc. Victorian moulded cast iron fireplace to bathroom. C18 doors. Victorian moulded cast iron fireplace to kitchen with patent water boiler and tap. Set of servants bells. One of the earliest Japanese Gardens in Britain by Lady Du Cane, still exists by the stream in the garden. Country Life, 14 March 1925.
