GV II
House and cottage. Circa 1600, altered in C18, early C19, and C20. Timber framed, plastered and weatherboarded, roofed with handmade red plain tiles and slate. Main range of 4 bays facing S. Central stack, altered to form 2 hearths with an entrance-passage between. C18/early C19 full-length 2-storey extension to rear, mainly with catslide roof, but raised in C20 to form a flat roof at left end and a shallow slate roof at right end, and C18 rear wing near right end, with axial stack. 2 storeys. 4-window range of C20 sashes. No. 21 has a 4-panel door and one stone step. No. 23 has a 6-panel door, 4 panels fielded, 2 glazed, in an eared doorcase with rusticated pilasters, pulvinated frieze, and dentilled and moulded pediment; one stone step. Moulded wooden eaves cornice with wrought iron gutter brackets. Stack rebuilt above roof in C19, with a diaper pattern of black bricks on red bricks. Evidence of underbuilt jetty in bay to left of stack. Chamfered transverse and axial beams, with lamb's tongue stops on some, others unstopped. C18 hearth facing to left, with curved interior, but back brought forward to make passage. C20 grate facing to right. Much internal studding removed. Jowled posts, some of the jowls mutilated. In front right corner, early C19 corner cupboard with arched head and profiled shelves, doors missing. In rear lean-to, early C19 straight stair with turned newels, mahogany handrail, stick balusters and closed string; the balustrade continues round both sides on first floor. Early C19 half-glazed door with 9 lights and crown glass into rear wing. Other early doors on first floor, of various types. Clasped purlin roof with arched wind-braces in one bay only. No. 23 was named Bucks until January 1987.
