Details
PAINSWICK EDGE SO 81 SE 2/63 Edge Farmhouse 21.10.55 II Not to be confused with Edge Hill Farmhouse (q.v.). Farmhouse, unused at time of survey (Dec 1986). C16, C17 and later squared limestone rubble, stone slate roof. T-plan with long principal block facing south, and deep wing to rear. Main block is 3½ storeys, 3-windowed. At ground floor are two 3-light recessed chamfer stone mullioned casements, with a third modified to take a C19 door, all beneath a continuous string; at first floor three 3-light flush chamfer-mullion casements, that to right deeper; at second floor three 2-light recessed chamfer- mullion casements with bars, but all blocked from within; to roof four 2-light leaded casements to gabled dormers. Left is small one-storey extension with 2 large brick stacks, main block has new brick stack left, and small ashlar stack to right gable. Left return is plain, right return has 2-light flush chamfer- mullion casements to first floor and attic, and a small C19 lean-to extension in brick with 16-pane sash with stone key to brick flat arch. Back has swept down roof from main block with C19 flush panel door and transom light with stone key in brick flat arch. The building is one storey less this side because of rising ground. East side of back wing is 1½ storey, with two 2-light flush chamfer mullion casements, a small 2-light lancet from a single piece of stone, and a blocked small single light extreme right; 12-light gabled dormer left, 2-light hollow-chamfer mullion casement in flush gablet, remains of drip stone, far right. Ridge stack at junction of wings, 2 diagonal ashlar flues with moulded cappings. North gable has some marlstone at low level; some pigeon openings in gable. West face has small plank door, left, and 2-light flush chamfer-mullion casement, both under stopped hoods, the latter with small horizontal light over, then a door in flush surround and a 3-light hollow chamfer mullion and transom casement under stopped hood. A swept down lean-to has 3-light swept dormer, and above this a 3-light gabled dormer. Interior has complex levels showing two- stage development. A stone spiral by the blank light in the wing, and remains of two pairs of crucks, otherwise heavy collar and purlin roof; front block has C19 roof structure. Ground floor centre room has deep chamfered stopped beam, and stone floors in two rooms. At junction of back wing with main block is room with deep chamfered beam compartmental ceiling with a curved deep cove at north end, a large bressummer fire-to-stone cheeks and a curing chamber. This might have been an open hall.
