Not to be confused with Edge Hill Farmhouse (q.v.). Farmhouse, unused at time
of survey (Dec 1986). C16, C17 and later squared limestone rubble, stone slate
roof. T-plan with long principal block facing south, and deep wing to rear.
Main block is 3½ storeys, 3-windowed. At ground floor are two 3-light recessed
chamfer stone mullioned casements, with a third modified to take a C19 door, all
beneath a continuous string; at first floor three 3-light flush chamfer-mullion
casements, that to right deeper; at second floor three 2-light recessed chamfer-
mullion casements with bars, but all blocked from within; to roof four 2-light
leaded casements to gabled dormers. Left is small one-storey extension with 2
large brick stacks, main block has new brick stack left, and small ashlar stack
to right gable. Left return is plain, right return has 2-light flush chamfer-
mullion casements to first floor and attic, and a small C19 lean-to extension in
brick with 16-pane sash with stone key to brick flat arch. Back has swept down
roof from main block with C19 flush panel door and transom light with stone key
in brick flat arch. The building is one storey less this side because of rising
ground. East side of back wing is 1½ storey, with two 2-light flush chamfer
mullion casements, a small 2-light lancet from a single piece of stone, and a
blocked small single light extreme right; 12-light gabled dormer left, 2-light
hollow-chamfer mullion casement in flush gablet, remains of drip stone, far
right. Ridge stack at junction of wings, 2 diagonal ashlar flues with moulded
cappings. North gable has some marlstone at low level; some pigeon openings in
gable. West face has small plank door, left, and 2-light flush chamfer-mullion
casement, both under stopped hoods, the latter with small horizontal light over,
then a door in flush surround and a 3-light hollow chamfer mullion and transom
casement under stopped hood. A swept down lean-to has 3-light swept dormer, and
above this a 3-light gabled dormer. Interior has complex levels showing two-
stage development. A stone spiral by the blank light in the wing, and remains
of two pairs of crucks, otherwise heavy collar and purlin roof; front block has
C19 roof structure. Ground floor centre room has deep chamfered stopped beam,
and stone floors in two rooms. At junction of back wing with main block is room
with deep chamfered beam compartmental ceiling with a curved deep cove at north
end, a large bressummer fire-to-stone cheeks and a curing chamber. This might
have been an open hall.
