The Malt House II
Dwelling, formerly ale house. Late C17. Squared and coursed marlstone, stone slate
roof. L-plan, gable stacks in rubble over ashlar skirts and with moulded cappings and
ashlar stack to gabled wing. Two storeys, attic, and part cellar, 5-windowed, 2-light
casements with transome, under continuous wood lintol and moulded drip to ground
floor, central modern glazed door under 2-pane transome light, flat edge-moulded
canopy on consoles, in wood; low, left, 2-light plain glazed opening to cellar, plain
chamfered stone mullion and surround; two small hipped dormers with ball finials. Return wing, left, as main front 2-windowed including two dormers and stair window to
left of gable; stone drips over wood lintols. Modern glazed door left of staircase,
and 2-light stone mullioned cellar window, as front. At back, 3-storey gable with
ball finial. Interior: dog-leg stair, twisted balusters, wide rectangular newel, c225 mm x 100 mm,
and heavy moulded handrail and contemporary dog-gate, in back wing great fireplace
with stone cheeks, wood bressumer, bread oven and salt cupboard with Jacobean
surround; in ground floor, right C19 cupboard with flat balusters in transome light
over door. Mostly original roof timbers to front block, much modified at back.
