CHURCH LANE The Grange II Shown on O.S. map as Churcham Farm. Farmhouse. Possibly
medieval; C17,18,19 with minor alterations C20. Random rubble low
down to cross wing, exposed timber-frame in gable: otherwise brick,
English bond or irregular; tiled roof. Long main block with cross
wing, and rear projection: 2 storey, attic in cross-wing. Main
front, cross wing on left; stone plinth, brick work above to
ground floor, with 3-light wooden casement window, weather-board
over. Storey-height close studding above, with no opening, framed
by ends of brick side walls. Exposed collar truss above with
struts, V struts and small, 2-light window in apex. Plain, brick
chimney on ridge in centre of wing. Late, single-storey wing
projects on left. Single-storey, hipped, leanto roof, 'L' plan
porch in angle with main block, upper half glazed. Beyond, 2-light
casement window, leaded lights, cambered brick arch: on right
vertical joint in brickwork. Door with heavy timber frame, flat
head and weatherboard over beyond, with small 4 pane casement
adjoining. Beyond boarded door with cambered brick arch, to cider
house: short projecting single-storey wing at end. Above 2-light
casement over porch with 2-light casement in gabled dormer on
right. Three-light mullioned window between doors, with iron
opening lights. On right a large gabled dormer, with 4-light metal
casement. Dentil eaves to right of vertical joint: brick chimney
on ridge.
Internally: moulded, probably medieval wall post in entrance hall,
jowelled for heavily-chamfered floor beam. Timber-framed cross-
walls exposed in first floor in main block. Heavily-chamfered
floor-beams to ground floor of cross wing. Jacobean-style
overmantel in rear ground floor cross-wing room, with Corinthian
columns: may have been brought from elsewhere. End of main wing
contains cider mill and press, both good examples and complete.
Room above originally granary with external steps on gable: dormer
added and roof-trusses altered early C20. Alterations said to be
by Mr. Trew, architect. Listing NGR: SO7683218634
