WHITELACKINGTON CP - ST3715 7/136 Challen and Holman monuments in churchyard, 5 and 8 metres north - of north transept, Church of St Mary the Virgin GV II Pair of chest tombs. (a) 8 metres north of transept, the Challen Monument: Chest tomb of early C18. Ham stone. Base buried; panels to each face with wave-mould frames, with half-drop division and fluted pilasters to flanks; moulded coving to hipped top with rounded leading edges. Commemorates --- Challen, died 1729. (b) 5 metres north of transept, the Holman Monument Chest tomb of late C18: Ham stone. Step base, moulded plinth; panelled sides, one each end and 2 each flank, the end panels set on curve, with deep- fluted Ionic pilasters; moulded coving to shallow hipped top with rounded leading edges. Commemorates Thomas Holman, Gentleman, died 1792, and his wife Mary, died 1799.
